The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has received the referral of three complaints from the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) against former FijiFirst general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
FICAC says the referral from FEO was received on September 29, 2023, and the complaint was then referred for legal assessment.
FICAC says they could not proceed further, in terms of an investigation, due to the sudden demise of former commissioner Ratu David Toganivalu because the FICAC Act, under Section 12 and Section 13, says all investigations and enquiries into suspected or alleged occurrence of an offence have to be sanctioned by the commissioner or deputy commissioner.
FICAC says since the appointment of the Acting Deputy Commissioner (Francis Puleiwai) in late November 2023, an investigation into the referral has commenced and is currently ongoing.
FICAC says divulging any further details about the case publicly may jeopardize the outcome of the case.
