The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has launched preliminary investigations into complaints filed by 26 Bangladeshi workers alleging mistreatment by their employer.

Six workers formally lodged a complaint with FICAC this week, citing serious allegations including unpaid wages, poor living conditions, inadequate food, lack of medical access, and threats of deportation. The workers, who are employed by a locally registered company and reside in Koronivia, also claim their employment contracts have been breached.

FICAC confirmed it is now reviewing the submissions to determine whether any violations of the FICAC Act or related laws have occurred. The Commission noted that the workers had previously sought assistance from the Department of Immigration and the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, but were reportedly unable to obtain a satisfactory resolution.

In a statement, FICAC reiterated its commitment to addressing corruption, abuse of power, and exploitation. The Commission also emphasized its dedication to promoting transparency and accountability across all sectors.

Due to the ongoing nature of the inquiry, FICAC has stated that no further comments will be made at this time.
