Fiji could benefit from stronger disaster response, emergency coordination and personnel support following a recent visit by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai Logavatu to the Nevada National Guard in the United States.

The Commander visited Nevada from 3 to 8 September 2026 under the Fiji-Nevada State Partnership Program, which began in 2019.

The visit focused on areas that directly support Fiji’s ability to respond to emergencies, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counter-narcotics operations, drone technology, intelligence and coordination between military and civilian agencies.

Nevada officials shared their experience in working with civilian authorities during disasters and other emergencies, providing potential lessons for strengthening Fiji’s own response systems.

The two sides also discussed expanding joint training, military exercises, professional exchanges and leadership development, including greater support for RFMF non-commissioned officers.

Family and personnel welfare was another key focus. The Fiji delegation observed programmes supporting military families, children and youth, as well as veterans receiving rehabilitation and long-term support.

Nevada National Guard also offered potential psychological support for RFMF personnel before and after deployments, including counselling and wellbeing monitoring.

The visit ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to cooperation, with the partnership continuing to provide opportunities to share skills, strengthen capabilities and improve Fiji’s preparedness for emergencies and regional security challenges.
