Fiji’s young futsal players will have one final opportunity to make their mark at the Youth Olympic Games when they take on Venezuela in their last group-stage fixture in Dakar, Senegal.
The under-17 girls team is scheduled to meet Venezuela at 3.30am on Friday, November 6, Fiji time, with the side hoping to secure its first victory after two challenging outings.
Despite suffering a 5–1 defeat to Ukraine on November 4, Fiji showed signs of improvement, particularly in the opening half. Kinisimere Botesulu found the net to bring Fiji within one goal at 2–1 before the break.
However, Ukraine proved stronger in the second half, scoring three additional goals to claim the victory.
Fiji’s latest result came after an 8–1 loss against tournament hosts Senegal in their opening match on November 2.
Akanisi Katonitabua registered Fiji’s only goal in that encounter, with Senegal taking a 4–1 lead into halftime before extending its advantage after the interval.
While the results have been difficult, the tournament represents an important chapter in Fiji’s sporting history, with the country making its first-ever appearance at the Youth Olympic Games with an under-17 girls futsal team.
Head coach Jose Gerardo said the team was proud to represent Fiji and create history for women’s futsal.
Gerardo also highlighted the value of competing against international opposition, explaining that the experience would help the players develop their decision-making, concentration and ability to work together when faced with pressure.
With captain Salanieta Vosadora leading the team, Fiji has managed to score in both matches.
The young players will now look to carry those positive moments into their final group encounter as they aim to finish their Olympic campaign on a high against Venezuela.
