The Fiji Meteorological Service is hosting a regional training programme aimed at strengthening tropical cyclone forecasting and preparedness across the South-West Pacific.
The 17th Session of the World Meteorological Organization Regional Association V Training Course on Tropical Cyclones is being held from October 5 to 16, bringing together meteorologists and tropical cyclone specialists from the region.
The two-week programme is designed to build technical knowledge and improve operational skills in monitoring, forecasting and communicating tropical cyclone threats.
The first week covers fundamental aspects of tropical cyclones, including their formation, structure, development and analysis. Participants will then move into advanced forecasting and warning practices during the second week.
Training also covers cyclone track and intensity forecasting, the use of numerical weather prediction guidance, satellite and observational analysis, warning preparation and communication, as well as operational procedures and regional coordination.
Participants will also examine lessons from recent tropical cyclone events and share experiences from their respective operations.
Fiji Met says the programme provides an opportunity for specialists to exchange knowledge and strengthen cooperation, with the broader aim of improving timely and accurate cyclone warnings for communities throughout the region.
