In a landmark development, the National Council of Persons with Disabilities in Fiji has reached a significant milestone by officially inaugurating the Suva Consultation for the Draft National Policy on Persons with Disabilities 2024-2033.

This marks a crucial step in a nationwide series of consultations aimed at actively engaging key stakeholders to shape the country’s disability policy for the next decade.

The Draft National Policy’s official opening signifies a pivotal moment in Fiji’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and empowering environment for individuals with disabilities.

The ongoing consultations reflect the nation’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and integrity, ensuring that no one is left behind in the policy-making process.

Ms Zema Semunegus, Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), commended the progress made in development inclusivity during the Pacific Community’s (SPC) project governance.

USAID’s substantial support has played a key role in advancing these efforts.

Ms Semunegus highlighted a noteworthy development in enhancing programming initiatives in the Pacific Islands the substantial financial commitment towards the Sustainable Business and Community Empowerment (SBCE) project governance activity.

Mr Ashley Bowe, Chief of Party of Governance implemented by Human Rights and Social Development Division at Pacific Community-SPC, emphasized their role in listening and responding to the unique needs of each community rather than dictating solutions.

The success of their collaborative efforts lies in adapting support accordingly.

The strides made in project governance, fueled by the collaboration between SPC and USAID, signal a promising path towards a more inclusive and accessible political landscape for persons with disabilities in the Pacific region.
