The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts will officially seal a 50-Year Girmit Time Capsule next Friday as part of the 147th National Girmit Commemoration celebrations.

The Time Capsule will be sealed next Friday and will preserve stories, artefacts, reflections and messages that honour the legacy of the Girmitiyas and Fiji’s shared history for future generations.

The capsule will remain sealed for 50 years before being officially opened on 15 May 2076 at the Fiji Museum.

Line Minister Charan Jeath Singh said the initiative reflects Fiji’s commitment to preserving the spirit, sacrifices and contributions of the Girmitiyas while encouraging future generations to remember and learn from the country’s history.

He said the Time Capsule would serve as a lasting tribute to the resilience and achievements of the Girmit community and their role in shaping modern Fiji.

The Ministry also confirmed that this year’s national commemoration programme will be delivered virtually from the Fiji Museum through online and television platforms.

The virtual format is expected to allow Fijians both locally and abroad to participate in commemorating the Girmit legacy and honouring the contributions of the Girmitiyas to Fiji’s development and multicultural identity.
