The Fiji Under-15 football team opened its OFC Development Tournament campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Caledonia.
The Baby Bula Boys started brightly, taking the game to their opponents in the opening stages. However, a mistake in midfield allowed New Caledonia to capitalise and take an early lead.
Fiji responded through Simione Poe, who scored twice to put his side in front. His first goal came from an indirect free kick before he added a second with a well-struck direct free kick.
New Caledonia fought back and restored parity from the penalty spot as the closely contested encounter remained evenly balanced.
Fiji appeared more composed in possession as the match progressed and controlled much of the tempo during the final 15 minutes. The side created several opportunities in search of a winner but was unable to find the decisive goal.
The points were eventually shared, with both teams settling for a draw in their opening match of the tournament.
Fiji will now turn its attention to Saturday’s clash against Tahiti, with kickoff scheduled for 12pm.
