The Fiji Under-20 rugby team warmed up for the World Under 20 Championship in South Africa later this year, by claiming the ‘Oceania Rugby Under 20 Challenger’ title.
The side completed a clean sweep of wins at the championship, and will now look forward to mixing it with the best in ‘age-grade’ international rugby, in just under four months.
Fiji and Samoa went head-to-head for the final prize in the Oceania Rugby Under20s Challenger title last night.
Fiji was first on the scoreboard scoring early tries by Tevita Savou and and Rupeni Nakiyoyo.
Samoa replied with wing Panaua Niu scoring off the back of a silky kick from captain Wally Vesi.
Both teams went into a breather with Fiji leading 14 points to 5.
In the second half, Fiji was again first on the scoreboard, this time Anare Tabakaucoro getting his name on the score sheet to extend the lead to 19-5.
Samoa closed the gap to seven points with an intercepted try from Niu, scoring his second try of the match.
Fiji extended their lead further after a try from Josh Uluibau to make it 26 -12 before Ebenezer Navula grabbed Fiji’s fifth try to secure a 31-17 victory for the side.
With Oceania Under 20s now done and dusted, more hard work lies ahead for this team.
The next stop is the World Under 20 championship in South Africa later this year.
