The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has intensified its food safety enforcement efforts, with its Food Unit team completing a two-week surveillance operation in Nausori that led to the closure of four major retail outlets for breaching hygiene and sanitation standards.
According to the Ministry, abatement notices were issued to the non-compliant businesses, and one retailer is now facing legal proceedings for defying closure orders.
Outlets will only be permitted to reopen once they meet the required health and safety standards following reinspection.
The operation saw inspections of over 60 food businesses, including retailers, canteens, street vendors, and wholesalers.
The Ministry stressed the importance of compliance and urged all food business operators issued with notices to act swiftly to rectify shortcomings.
Health teams from local municipal councils were also acknowledged for their support during the Nausori operation. Similar surveillance is scheduled for Navua and Korovou in the coming weeks.
