Former SODELPA Party Leader and current Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka has reaffirmed his commitment to the Coalition alliance, urging calm and constructive dialogue amid concerns raised by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

While responding to Fiji One News, Gavoka emphasized that SODELPA remains committed to the government it helped form after the 2022 general election, calling the current situation regrettable but resolvable.

“SODELPA wants to be in the coalition. Our people want to be in the coalition,” Gavoka said.

“We want to see what the cause of this issue is. We didn’t want this to happen. We will do what needs to be done,” he added.

Gavoka’s remarks come after Prime Minister Rabuka threatened to break the coalition agreement, citing mounting internal concerns.

When asked whether the coalition is serving the people of Fiji effectively, Gavoka pointed to the broader democratic foundations of the country and expressed concern that the freedoms gained in recent years are being used to unfairly criticize the government.

“Fiji is on a different level right now,” he said. “Unfortunately, the freedom is being misused to reflect on the coalition in a negative way. But the fundamental in this country is very solid. We are a democratic country. If you ask people to go back, they will say they don’t want to.”
