People travelling through Nabouwalu and businesses relying on the northern maritime gateway could benefit from improved navigation information as Fiji Hydrographic Services begins a new survey of the area and its surrounding waters.

The Fiji Hydrographic Services team from the Directorate General of Strategic Transformation and Development has moved to Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu after completing survey work at Malau.

The survey operation received additional support today with the arrival of RFNS Volasiga, which has joined the team to strengthen the operation’s capabilities.

Nabouwalu plays an important role as a port of entry for northern Fiji, handling passengers, cargo and essential services.

Keeping hydrographic information accurate and up to date is important for vessels navigating the area, as well as for port operations and the planning of future maritime infrastructure.

The latest survey is expected to provide information that can support safer maritime travel and the sustainable development of Nabouwalu.

Reliable data could also assist future investment, improve inter-island connectivity and support the movement of people and goods across Vanua Levu.

The operation is part of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ ongoing work through the Navy to provide hydrographic services and contribute to maritime safety and national development across Fiji’s waters.
