Cabinet has approved the importation of an improved strain of tilapia from Thailand as part of efforts to boost aquaculture production.
The Chitralada Plus strain will be brought into the country through a partnership between the Ministry of Fisheries and the Pacific Community (SPC).
Officials expect the new broodstock to deliver better growth, survival and overall productivity, helping increase local tilapia supply while reducing reliance on imports.
The initiative will also establish a stronger breeding programme and improve the supply of quality fish fry to both commercial and small-scale farmers.
Before entering Fiji’s breeding system, the imported broodstock will be kept under strict biosecurity controls. SPC and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji will provide technical assistance throughout the process.
