Hundreds of Fijians living with amputations are expected to regain their mobility later this year through a free artificial limb programme supported by the Government of India.
The Indian High Commission has confirmed that the Jaipur Foot Camp will begin in October, providing artificial limbs to around 650 people in Suva, Nadi and Labasa.
The initiative is aimed at helping people return to their daily lives by restoring their independence and mobility.
“We are now going to hold a camp for providing artificial limbs to around 650 people in Fiji who have suffered amputations”.
Every day 15 people or 20 people would be scheduled to come over to the camp, and they will be benefiting from the limbs which are provided” Mehta highlighted.
The two-month programme will be delivered in partnership with Fiji’s Ministry of Health.
Mehta said many people have been waiting for this assistance and hopes the programme will bring renewed confidence to those receiving the artificial limbs.
“It’s going to be a joyous feeling for the people who have lost their mobility. Once they come in the morning, by the evening they will have their restored mobility”.
“We plan to hold the camp over two months starting in October” he said.
