England assistant coach Joe El-Abd is set to return to French club rugby after the 2027 Rugby World Cup, having been appointed head coach of ASM Clermont Auvergne.
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) confirmed the move, which will see El-Abd leave his role with England after the global tournament. Clermont have also expanded Christophe Urios’ responsibilities, appointing him head of sport at the Top 14 club.
El-Abd joined England’s coaching staff in 2024 and said his immediate priority remained helping the national side achieve success before the World Cup.
He said his time with England had been a source of pride, adding that he remained focused on the team’s objectives and upcoming Nations Championship fixtures at Allianz Stadium.
The former Bristol flanker has extensive experience in French rugby, having played for Toulon and Oyonnax before beginning his coaching career. He joined Castres in 2015, spending four years with the club and helping them win the Top 14 title, before returning to Oyonnax.
His appointment at Clermont marks a return to a country where he has spent a significant part of his playing and coaching career and where he lives with his young family.
England head coach Steve Borthwick praised El-Abd’s contribution to the national setup, highlighting his rugby knowledge, coaching ability and influence within the team.
Borthwick said El-Abd would remain fully committed to England’s campaign over the next 12 months before taking up the opportunity to continue his coaching career in France.
For now, El-Abd’s focus remains on England’s preparations and their push for success at the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with his next chapter in French club rugby awaiting after the tournament.
