Prominent lawyer Jon Apted has been named Head Judge for the 70th FMF Hibiscus Festival, leading a five-member judging panel that includes former Hibiscus queen Michele Smith.

Apted brings 40 years of experience in the legal profession, along with a background in fashion, photography, television and entertainment.

The Hibiscus Festival Committee says his creativity, attention to detail and extensive judging experience make him well placed to lead this year’s panel.

Joining Apted is Michele Smith, who was crowned Miss Hibiscus in 1975 and returns to the festival 51 years after winning the title.

Smith has built an international career in marketing, public relations, events and destination promotion and will now help judge and guide a new generation of Hibiscus contestants.

Also joining the panel is Vineeta Nand, a Rotarian and Past District Governor of Rotary International District 9920.

Nand brings experience across the banking, aviation, government and communications sectors, as well as an extensive background in leadership, public affairs, stakeholder engagement and community service.

The Permanent Secretary for Justice, Selina Kuruleca has also been named as a judge.

Kuruleca is a counsellor, psychologist and educator with decades of experience in public service, education, mental health advocacy, leadership and community work.

Rounding out the five-member judging panel is climate activist and communications specialist Fenton Lutunatabua.

Lutunatabua, the founder of Pacific Climate Warriors, has more than 20 years of experience in climate action, communications and movement building.

He is also a narrative strategist, filmmaker, podcaster and TED speaker who has worked to amplify Pacific and small-island voices internationally.

The five judges will have the responsibility of assessing contestants during the 70th FMF Hibiscus Festival as they compete for this year’s titles.
