For Laisa Balenaiqaqi Nadriva, graduating from the University of the South Pacific yesterday with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Economics and Official Statistics, was an achievement deeply rooted in perseverance, sacrifice and family support.

Laisa’s journey to graduation was not without challenges. Raised by her mother, she faced difficulties throughout her education, both academically and personally. There were moments when the pressure became difficult to manage and she considered giving up.

Despite this, Laisa chose to keep many of her struggles to herself because she did not want her mother to worry. Instead, she continued to draw strength from the sacrifices her mother had made to give her an education and the opportunity to build a better future.

Her mother remained Laisa’s greatest source of encouragement from the very beginning. Her strength, love and belief in her daughter helped Laisa stay focused and continue moving forward, even during times when she doubted herself.

For Laisa, yesterday’s graduation represented much more than completing a university qualification. It was a reflection of the challenges she overcame, the sacrifices she made and the personal battles she faced along the way.

She also expressed her gratitude to her family, friends and lecturers, who supported and encouraged her throughout her university journey.

However, the achievement carried a special meaning for her mother, who raised her on her own and did everything she could to provide Laisa with an education.

Laisa says she may never be able to repay her mother for all she has done, but her graduation was a moment she hoped would make her proud.

As Laisa celebrated becoming a university graduate, she said the achievement belonged to both of them.
