The Suva Magistrates Court has dismissed the bail variation application, filed by former Attorney-General.
This is in relation to his application to travel to Singapore, for medical review and treatment.
The defence counsel had submitted two medical reports in support of his bail application.
The application also stated that the specialised procedure that requires Sayed-Khaiyum to travel abroad – is not available in Fiji.
Magistrate Yogesh Prasad ruled – that Sayed-Khaiyum’s application for bail variation to travel to Singapore for medical review, is not essential, not necessary or pressing.
Magistrate Prasad says – there is no evidence of an immediate medical emergency.
He adds the applicant has failed to satisfy the court or provide any evidence that Fiji does not have any medical facility, equipment, know-how, specialist and environment to monitor and evaluate his medical situation.
Magistrate Prasad adds that it is important to note that Sayed-Khaiyum is not deprived from any medical procedures as he is already on bail in Fiji and is free to move around for medical treatment locally without any restrictions.
Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with abuse of office.
It is alleged that he authorised the government to pay taxes for former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem without requisite approval from the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President.
