Veteran winger Manasa Mataele will remain with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua after signing a one-year contract extension ahead of the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.
The extension secures further experience and depth in the Drua backline, with Mataele returning for a second season after joining the club ahead of the 2026 campaign.
Fresh from representing the Flying Fijians at the 2026 Pacific Nations Cup, Mataele featured against Canada and Japan as Fiji reached the tournament final.
The Vanuavatu, Lau native says his decision to stay was driven by his enjoyment of his first season with the club and his desire to continue contributing to the team.
“Coming back home has been a breath of fresh air. Putting on the Drua jersey and knowing I’m representing not only myself, but my family and the whole of Fiji, has been really special,” Mataele said.
The 29-year-old produced several standout performances during the 2026 season, including a decisive two-try display in the Drua’s historic win over the Brumbies in Canberra and a hat-trick against the Queensland Reds in the club’s final game of the season.
Fijian Drua General Manager Rugby Baden Stephenson welcomed Mataele’s recommitment, praising his experience, finishing ability and impact on the squad. He said the winger’s continued presence will be important for the balance of the team as the Drua prepare for the 2027 season.
Mataele previously played Super Rugby Pacific for the Crusaders, Chiefs and Western Force before returning home to join the Drua.
