The Matuku community will play a greater role in maintaining the island’s roads following the launch of a vegetation control initiative by the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

Under the initiative, Divine American Groups Pte Ltd of Lomati Village has been awarded a contract to carry out regular vegetation maintenance along the island’s roads.

The programme follows the commissioning of upgraded roads on Matuku and aims to improve road safety, visibility and accessibility through routine upkeep.

The work is being delivered through the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) Small Works Contracts programme, which engages local communities in maintaining rural road infrastructure.

Residents and local groups undertake tasks such as clearing roadside vegetation, carrying out minor repairs and keeping roads in good condition. The approach also creates opportunities for communities to earn income while contributing to the upkeep of infrastructure they rely on daily.

FRA programme managers provide guidance and support to ensure maintenance work is carried out effectively. The initiative has received positive feedback from participating communities and stakeholders, particularly for its contribution to income generation and community empowerment.

During the launch, Ro Filipe urged the Matuku community to take responsibility for caring for their roads and protecting the investment for current and future generations.

The initiative highlights ongoing cooperation between Government, FRA and rural communities to support sustainable road maintenance, provide employment opportunities and encourage greater community ownership of local infrastructure.
