The countdown is on for the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister’s Cup, with five nations preparing to battle for regional football supremacy at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

As anticipation builds ahead of Thursday’s kickoff, Fiji today hosted the MSG Sports Ministers Meeting, bringing together regional leaders to discuss how sport can drive development, strengthen communities and foster unity across Melanesia.

Fiji National Sports Commission Chief Executive Peter Mazey says sport continues to play a vital role in improving lives and creating opportunities for young people throughout the Pacific.

Mazey highlighted the importance of investing in sport at all levels, noting its ability to promote healthy lifestyles, social inclusion and national pride.

Meanwhile, Solomon Islands Acting Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Home Affairs Daniel Rove says his country is confident heading into its opening match against Papua New Guinea.

Rove says the Solomon Islands squad has undergone extensive preparation in the lead-up to the tournament and is eager to test itself against some of the region’s strongest football nations.

With teams arriving in Fiji and final preparations underway, Mazey is encouraging football fans to fill the stands and create a memorable atmosphere for players and supporters alike.

He says the tournament is more than just competition, serving as a celebration of Melanesian culture, friendship and sporting excellence.

With regional pride on the line and Melanesia’s top football talent ready to shine, all eyes now turn to Suva as the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup kicks off on Thursday.
