Cabinet has approved a proposal to grant Nadi city status, recognising the town’s growing role in Fiji’s economy as a key tourism, commercial and international gateway.
The official declaration and a community celebration are expected to take place in December 2026, marking a new chapter in Nadi’s development.
Figures show that Nadi recorded 1,106 approved development applications between 2022 and 2025, with a combined value of approximately $1.23 billion. The projects reflect investment across residential, commercial and tourism sectors.
The move to city status is intended to attract further investment, enhance municipal services and strengthen urban planning and governance. It is also expected to support efforts to address ongoing challenges, including traffic congestion and flooding.
