Fiji’s National Referendum will be held on Wednesday, 9 December 2026, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced.
The announcement follows President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s assent to the National Referendum Act 2026 on 2 October.
The referendum will give eligible Fijians the opportunity to vote on the question or questions put before them.
Rabuka has urged Fijians to seek information, ask questions and make informed decisions, while calling for discussions surrounding the referendum to remain peaceful and respectful.
The referendum will be administered by the Supervisor of Elections under the direction of the Electoral Commission and in accordance with the law.
Rabuka has also written to the Electoral Commission requesting that general election campaigning be suspended until after the return of the Writ for the Referendum, to allow the referendum process to proceed with the necessary focus.
The President is expected to issue the Writ for the Referendum on 9 November, with polling scheduled for 9 December. The results are expected to be announced by 14 December, subject to the completion of all processes required by law.
Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Usaia Ratuvili and Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa will provide further information on the electoral arrangements.
Fijians have been encouraged to follow official information issued by the Electoral Commission and the Fijian Elections Office.
