History has already been made, but Navatu Secondary School Under-19 are not satisfied yet as they prepare for the Vodafone Fiji Secondary School Rugby Union Super Deans final against grade favorites, Lelean Memorial School.
The Northern school booked its place in the decider with a 22-17 win over Ratu Kadavulevu School at Burkhurst Park last weekend.
Team Captain and former Under 18 school boy, Timoci Kanawabu says the team’s belief remained strong despite having limited training gear and no regular ground to train on.
“I had the privilege of being part of the Under 18 School Boys last year. I was currently attending Bucalevu Secondary at the time that I joined the school boys. This year, I’m grateful to my coach and teacher, Mr. Alipate Ravulo for giving me an opportunity to play for Navatu under 19.”
Despite these challenges, he credits their coach and teachers, and their parents for helping the players stay committed throughout their campaign.
“I’d like to thank the boys for persevering this far. It has been a long journey but we never once lost hope in the fact that we didn’t have a ground to train on every day or that there wasn’t much training gear. It didn’t dampen our spirits. I’d also like to thank our parents from Navatu for their support, because it was due to their support that we have come the far.”
Kanawabu says the team is expecting a tough final but is ready to embrace the challenge.
“We’re expecting a good final next week and we’re ready. Whatever happens, we stand ready for the challenge.”
The historic run continues next week, with Navatu determined to turn their breakthrough into a memorable finish.
