Story by Jonathan Kumar
Navunikabi villagers had once struggled with access to clean drinking water due to water supply disruptions, often leading to breeding for water borne diseases.
Now the village and nearby schools have proper water access due to a dam, water treatment system, and water storage tanks, allowing clean drinking water to reach every house.
The Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation, and sponsors, commissioned a Rural Wash Programme at Navunikabi Village and school last week.
Rotary New Zealand World Community Services Director, Stuart Betty, hopes the program would assist in lessening medical costs and enhance children’s education and health.
Navunikabi Village Water Committee and the school has been established and trained to operate the water treatment system.
The children of Navunikabi village can focus on improving their literacy rates with the installment of the new water system.
The project, worth $200,000 is part of the Rural WASH programme that aims to improve WASH infrastructure in 12 communities and schools in Namosi and Cakaudrove.
