Fiji’s specialised oral and maxillofacial surgical services are set to receive a boost following the donation of a new NSK Oral Maxillofacial Surgical Drill and Saw System valued at NZD $100,000.

The equipment will give the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Unit access to a dedicated surgical drill and saw system, addressing a longstanding equipment gap.

Until now, the Unit did not have its own surgical saw and had to share a single drill with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department.

With the new system, the OMFS Unit will be able to conduct independent surgical lists and carry out procedures including orthognathic surgery, trauma repair and reconstructive surgery.

The precision equipment is also expected to enhance patient safety, improve theatre efficiency and reduce delays and surgical backlogs.

The donation was facilitated by the Bhindi Family Foundation, while the equipment was supplied by NSK (Nakanishi International).

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services says the contribution will strengthen specialised surgical services by ensuring medical teams have access to the equipment needed to provide safe and efficient patient care.

The Ministry has acknowledged the Bhindi Family Foundation and NSK for their support towards improving patient outcomes and strengthening Fiji’s health services.
