The Nadroga Rugby Union has unveiled a new and enhanced Kalevu Shield, reinforcing its status as the most prestigious prize in the province’s club rugby competition.

Bigger, stronger and rich in cultural significance, the new shield represents more than just success on the rugby field. It embodies the pride, tradition and fighting spirit that have defined Nadroga rugby for generations.

Named after the title of the Paramount Chief of Nadroga/Navosa, the Kalevu Shield reflects the authority, identity and heritage of the province. It stands as a tribute to the 22 districts of Nadroga and Navosa, whose respect for the Kalevu title and passion for rugby have been passed down through generations.

The shield’s creation is a story of provincial unity. It was carved from a vesi tree sourced from the Yavusa of Vusu in Namatakula and handcrafted by skilled artisans from the Vanua o Nakaria in Yako. Traditional masi designs from Vatulele complete the shield, showcasing the culture, strength and identity of the people of Nadroga and Navosa.

For decades, the Nadroga Rugby Union Club Competition has served as a pathway for players to progress from village rugby to provincial, national and international levels. The Kalevu Shield remains the ultimate prize, with clubs competing each season for the honour of lifting one of the province’s most treasured sporting symbols.

As Nadroga rugby continues to build on its proud legacy, the new Kalevu Shield is expected to inspire players, villages and supporters for generations to come.
