Rakiraki Town saw a significant economic milestone today with the official opening of the G.S. Raj Shop Plus Supermarket. The $2 million investment, owned by former Cabinet Minister and businessman George Shiu Raj, is expected to employ around 40 people and improve access to essential goods and services for the local population.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the opening ceremony and commended Mr. Raj and his team for their commitment to the development of the Ra Province. He reflected on Mr. Raj’s journey from a small trader in 1952 to a prominent political and business figure.
“This new supermarket is more than a business — it’s a step forward for local development,” Prime Minister Rabuka said. “It will make everyday essentials more accessible and create employment opportunities, reducing the need for residents to travel long distances.”
The Prime Minister also acknowledged plans for a second supermarket in the area, calling it a sign of growing entrepreneurial activity in the region. He used the occasion to emphasize the value of community partnerships in driving national development.
The event concluded with a message of reflection and gratitude, coinciding with Holy Week.
