National Federation Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad says Fiji’s independence must guarantee every citizen dignity, security and equal opportunities, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or economic circumstances.

In his Fiji Day message marking the 56th anniversary of independence, Professor Prasad said nation-building remained unfinished, with the country facing important political and constitutional questions.

He said Fiji achieved independence through political struggle, negotiation and compromise, with leaders recognising the need to secure a common future for the people.

Professor Prasad highlighted the contributions of former NFP leaders A.D. Patel and Siddiq Koya, whose commitment to equality, justice and democratic representation helped shape the foundations of the nation.

He urged political leaders and communities to avoid divisions along ethnic and religious lines, warning that Fiji’s history had demonstrated the consequences of allowing politics to divide its people.

Professor Prasad also stressed that Fiji’s Constitution belonged to its people and said any effort to reshape the country’s constitutional future must respect the law, encourage meaningful public participation and avoid unnecessary haste.

He said no political leader or government should place its ambitions above the democratic rights of citizens.

Professor Prasad encouraged Fijians to exercise their democratic rights by questioning decisions, expressing disagreement peacefully and demanding accountability while respecting one another.

He said the cost of living, employment, education and healthcare remained immediate concerns for thousands of families.

He added that young people deserved opportunities to develop their talents, achieve their aspirations and build a future filled with hope.

Professor Prasad said Fiji’s strength lay in its people and their ability to overcome challenges together, despite differences in culture, tradition and faith.

He called on Fijians to renew their commitment to democracy, celebrate diversity and ensure every citizen had an equal place in national life.

He extended Fiji Day greetings on behalf of his family and the National Federation Party, wishing the people of Fiji a happy and peaceful celebration.
