Queen Victoria School has finally broken its four-year title drought in the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League Under-19 competition after defeating arch-rivals Ratu Kadavulevu School 28-26 in a thrilling grand final at Govind Park yesterday.

The much-anticipated clash lived up to expectations, with both traditional rugby league powerhouses delivering an intense and entertaining contest in front of a packed crowd.

QVS dominated the opening half and headed into the break with a comfortable 16-6 lead after capitalising on strong defence and disciplined attack.

RKS came out firing in the second spell, mounting a spirited comeback and narrowing the gap late in the match, however, QVS held their composure in the closing stages to secure the narrow two-point victory and reclaim the Under-19 title for the first time in four years.

The victory sparked jubilant celebrations among the QVS supporters, players, and old scholars, with the “Mighty Knights of Matavatucou” ending years of heartbreak in the competition.

Also present at the finals was Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who congratulated QVS on their hard-fought win and commended both schools for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and determination throughout the match.

Rabuka praised the quality of rugby league showcased during the finals and acknowledged the efforts of all participating schools across the different grades.

He also congratulated the winners while offering words of encouragement to the runners-up, saying their commitment and performances had made their respective schools proud.

The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League finals once again highlighted the depth of young rugby league talent in the country, with supporters turning out in large numbers to witness one of the biggest events on the school sports calendar.
