Efforts to strengthen sustainable waste management in Lautoka received a major boost with the official handover of recycling equipment under the Recycle Organics Program at the Lautoka Municipal Market on 28 May 2026.

The ceremony saw the transfer of an Isuzu truck, wheelie bins and compost bins to support organic waste collection and recycling initiatives across the city.

Government officials, development partners, market vendors, stakeholders and invited guests attended the event, highlighting a shared commitment to improving environmental practices and promoting cleaner communities.

Speakers at the ceremony included Lautoka City Council Special Administrator Chair and Acting Chief Executive Officer Taitusi Rasoki, Recycle Organics Fiji consultant Wayne Fuakilau, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change representative Kalikeni Sirivalu, and Head of Cooperation at the Canadian High Commission in Suva, David Fournier, who attended as chief guest.

The programme also featured a traditional welcome ceremony and cultural performances by members of the Lautoka Market Vendors Association before the official presentation of the Isuzu NQR75L truck and other donated recycling equipment.

Lautoka City Council acknowledged the contributions of its development partners, supporting organisations, municipal staff and stakeholders whose collaboration helped bring the initiative to fruition.

The project is expected to enhance organic waste management efforts while encouraging greater environmental responsibility and sustainable recycling practices throughout Lautoka.
