After more than 30 years of service with the Ministry of Forestry, retired forestry expert Malakai Sevudredre is continuing his life’s mission advancing sustainable forestry from his village of Lawaki in Namena, Tailevu.

Now operating as a sole trader, Sevudredre is among the many beneficiaries of the Forest Subsidy Programme (FSP), which saw a major funding increase from $50,000 to $250,000 in the 2023–2024 fiscal year.

The expanded support is targeted at boosting forestry-based cottage industries across the country.

A former trainer at the Ministry’s Forestry Training Centre, Sevudredre is using his expertise to run training workshops on the safe and efficient use of chainsaws and forestry tools.

His sessions have reached companies and cooperatives throughout Viti Levu, though logistical constraints have limited his reach to other islands.

At 58, he remains hopeful that with better resources including reliable connectivity and transportation he can grow his business and bring sustainable forestry practices to more communities.

Connectivity remains a major hurdle, as Lawaki is listed by Telecom Fiji as a “black spot,” hindering communication and outreach.

Despite these setbacks, Sevudredre’s passion for environmental stewardship continues to inspire.

His story reflects the deep potential of grassroots forestry advocates and the critical need for infrastructure that empowers them to succeed.
