A man charged with the attempted murder of a police officer has been directed to provide medical evidence to support his claim that he was hospitalised and not evading court proceedings.

Saimoni Rokotunidau appeared before Justice Dane Tuiqereqere in the High Court in Suva this morning.

His bail was revoked after he failed to appear in court between 28th July and 13th August this year.

A bench warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody.

State Counsel Hezekiah Naufaga informed the court that the State objects to bail and needs to verify Rokotunidau’s claim that he was in hospital during the period he failed to attend court.

Rokotunidau is alleged to have been the driver of a vehicle that deliberately drove into a roadblock manned by a police officer in Laqere in May this year.

Justice Tuiqereqere also directed the accused to address his legal representation, noting that his lawyer had repeatedly failed to appear in court.

The judge made it clear that the matter would not be delayed further and informed the accused that a trial date would be set next Tuesday.
