The High Court in Suva will hear a bail application from Saimoni Rokotunidau next Thursday.

Rokotunidau is charged with the attempted murder of a police officer following an alleged incident in May this year.

He appeared before High Court Judge Justice Dane Tuiqereqere this morning.

The court was informed that his previous counsel, Jerry Dinati, has withdrawn from the matter, with Rokotunidau now represented by the Legal Aid Commission.

Legal Aid lawyer Severo Ravu told the court he is awaiting the handover of disclosures and documents from Dinati by close of business today so that an affidavit in support of the bail application can be prepared and filed.

The court has directed the prosecution to file and serve its affidavit by Tuesday next week.

Rokotunidau has been directed to provide medical evidence in support of his claim that he was hospitalised during the period he failed to appear in court and was therefore not evading court proceedings.

His bail was revoked after he failed to appear in court between the 28th of July and 13th August.

Rokotunidau is alleged to have been the driver of a vehicle that deliberately drove into a roadblock manned by a police officer.

The matter has been adjourned to next Thursday for the bail hearing.
