Schools are being urged to take stronger action against bullying, harassment, intimidation and abuse while ensuring students are provided with safe and respectful learning environments.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro said recent concerns involving bullying and student accidents highlight the need for schools to strengthen supervision, risk management and child protection measures.

He said bullying, whether physical, verbal, emotional, social or online, should not be accepted in schools. Preventable accidents must also be addressed through proper supervision and safer school practices.

Parents and guardians have been encouraged to report bullying, injuries, accidents and other serious concerns involving students to Heads of Schools. Schools are required to investigate such reports and refer matters to District Education Officers where necessary, in line with existing policies.

Schools must also consistently apply the Behaviour Management Policy and Child Protection in Schools Policy, which provide guidance on prevention, early intervention and managing serious or repeated misconduct.

The Ministry is continuing efforts to improve student wellbeing through the recruitment of school counsellors, training of Child Protection Officers and awareness programmes covering bullying, violence, safety and responsible behaviour.

Heads of Schools and teachers have been reminded to respond promptly to reports of bullying, violence, unsafe conduct and potential hazards.

Students are also encouraged to support one another, reject bullying and report unsafe situations to teachers, school heads or District Education Officers.

Government says it will continue working with schools, parents, communities and relevant agencies to create safer and more caring learning environments for students.
