The Government-funded Insurance Scheme for Social Welfare Recipients will officially end on August 1 following the implementation of the 2026-2027 National Budget.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection says the scheme, which was managed by the Ministry of Finance, will no longer operate after Parliament approved the new budget without allocating funding for its continuation.

The programme previously offered one-off financial assistance to eligible social welfare recipients for funeral expenses, fire damage and accident-related claims.

Despite the closure of the scheme, the Ministry says support for vulnerable individuals and families will continue through existing government assistance programmes.

These include the Family Assistance Scheme, Child Protection Allowance, Disability Allowance Scheme, Social Pension Scheme, Transport Assistance Programme and the Allowance for Rural Pregnant Mothers.

The Ministry says the Government remains committed to strengthening social protection and will continue assessing the effectiveness and long-term sustainability of its welfare programmes.

It adds that the insurance scheme may be reconsidered in future budget and policy discussions, with any changes to be announced publicly.
