Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko has commended members of the Fijian community living in Samoa for their contributions and for representing Fiji’s values with pride abroad.

Jitoko, who is in Samoa on behalf of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for the nation’s 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations, met with members of the Fijian diaspora and acknowledged their role in strengthening Fiji’s image overseas.

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker thanked Fijians in Samoa for their achievements and positive contributions within their adopted home, noting that their actions help shape international perceptions of Fiji.

He encouraged community members to respect the laws of their host country, contribute positively to society, and continue demonstrating the values that define Fiji.

Jitoko reminded those present that wherever they reside, they carry Fiji’s identity and reputation with them, urging them to remain proud ambassadors of their homeland.

The Speaker also highlighted the economic importance of remittances sent home by Fijians living abroad, describing them as a valuable source of support for families and a significant contributor to the national economy.

He further emphasised the importance of faith, saying that a strong relationship with God remains a guiding force behind the success, values, and resilience of many Fijians living overseas.

Concluding his address, Jitoko encouraged the diaspora to continue pursuing excellence and serving as positive representatives of Fiji wherever they live.

Among those inspired by the Speaker’s message was Rupeni Tamanikaiyaroi, now a Samoan citizen, who said the address challenged him to continue carrying the Fijian flag with pride.
