Speight says Truth and Reconciliation Commission does not have teeth, neither the mandate to actually succeed

George Speight says he believes a Truth and Reconciliation Commission is a necessary part of Fiji’s path forward but argues that underlying constitutional issues should be addressed before such a process can be fully effective.

In his submission to the Constitutional Review Commission, Speight says he had chosen not to appear before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, maintaining that while he supports the concept, the process lacks the mandate and does not have the teeth to actually succeed.

Speight argued that constitutional matters should be resolved first before any reconciliation process proceeds.

Despite his concerns, Speight acknowledged that there were positive elements within the current constitution.
