South Africa’s pursuit of a third straight Rugby World Cup title is now taking shape following the confirmation of the 2027 tournament draw on 23 July 2026.

The reigning champions have been drawn in Pool B alongside Italy, Georgia and Romania, giving Rassie Erasmus’ team a strong chance of finishing at the top of the group and advancing to the Round of 16.

Italy are expected to pose the biggest threat to South Africa’s position at the top of the pool, while Georgia and Romania could provide a physical challenge for the Springboks.

While the pool stage appears favourable for the defending champions, the road beyond it could become considerably more difficult.

According to RUCK, a first-place finish in Pool B could set up a Round of 16 clash with the runners-up from Pool E, where Japan and the United States are considered leading contenders.

A potential quarter-final against either New Zealand or Australia could then await the Springboks, followed by a possible semi-final meeting with France, one of the teams expected to challenge for the title.

Should South Africa reach the final, England are currently projected as the most likely opponent, although New Zealand could also emerge as a contender for the championship match.

The Springboks will therefore enter the 2027 tournament with a clear opportunity to make history, but their projected knockout route could demand victories over some of the world’s leading rugby nations.
