No Member of Parliament currently holds the Ministry of Sugar portfolio, with the position yet to be formally gazetted.
Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna says no minister has been officially assigned the Sugar portfolio, although he is currently overseeing matters relating to the sugar industry.
Tunabuna says he has been carrying out the work associated with the portfolio to ensure there is continued oversight and support for the industry.
The clarification comes amid ongoing attention on Fiji’s sugar sector, with key issues including industry performance, farmer welfare and the sustainability of sugar production remaining on the national agenda.
While Tunabuna continues to attend to matters concerning the sugar industry, the formal appointment of a minister responsible for the portfolio remains pending.
