The Fiji Sugar Corporation says sugar supplies are expected to improve in the coming weeks as production increases and fresh stocks reach retailers.

The corporation said temporary shortages in some supermarkets and retail outlets were caused by an unexpected delay to the start of the 2026 crushing season, which reduced domestic sugar stocks. To manage the limited supply, FSC introduced temporary rationing to ensure sugar remained available across the country and to prevent widespread stockouts.

All three FSC sugar mills are now operating, with the Lautoka Mill beginning crushing on 14 July 2026. As production continues, sugar bagging has resumed and newly produced stocks are being distributed through the local supply network.

FSC says consumers should gradually see more sugar on supermarket shelves as retailers receive and restock their supplies over the coming weeks.

The corporation has also reduced its outstanding customer orders. Around 65 tonnes of retail-pack sugar orders remain and are expected to be cleared by the end of this week. All pending June orders for 25-kilogram bags have already been completed, with deliveries now being made for current monthly orders.

To strengthen local supply, FSC has imported sugar from overseas. Shipments from New Zealand have already arrived and are being distributed, while additional consignments from Thailand are scheduled to arrive throughout August and the following months to support local production and maintain adequate stock levels.

FSC says it is continuing to work closely with customers to ensure available sugar is distributed fairly across the country while thanking consumers, retailers and stakeholders for their patience during the temporary shortage.
