Residents and commuters along the Suva–Lami corridor may hear tsunami warning sirens today, Tuesday, 11 August, as authorities carry out a live test of the emergency alert system.

The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) is conducting the exercise between 10am and 12pm to ensure the 13 tsunami sirens positioned along the Suva foreshore are operating properly and to support community preparedness for a possible tsunami emergency.

The sirens being tested are located at the Water Authority of Fiji’s Kinoya Sewerage Plant, FINTEL and the RFMF Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa, USP Statham, USP Lower Campus and USP Main Campus, Veiuto Primary School, the Government Training Centre in Nasese, the i-Taukei Trust Fund Board, SCC Civic Car Park Rooftop, the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji on Renown Street in Suva Central, Government Shipping Services in Walu Bay, and Lami Town.

For people in the affected corridor, the key message is that today’s siren activation is part of a planned test. No evacuation is required.

Authorities are encouraging members of the public to remain calm if they hear the sirens and to help spread the information among family members, friends and colleagues in the Suva–Lami area.
