The Tailevu Provincial Council is prioritising economic revitalisation as a key strategy to address poverty and social challenges affecting communities across the province.

Council Chairman Semi Matalau says poverty is a major contributing factor driving some young people towards drug use, theft and other criminal activities, with some eventually ending up in prison.

He says creating sustainable economic opportunities and improving livelihoods are essential to addressing these issues and providing young people with better prospects for the future.

Speaking at the Tailevu Provincial Council meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica says the province has significant potential to expand its export market, with aquaculture and cocoa farming identified as key sectors that could drive economic growth.

The council is also prioritising infrastructure development, including the construction of a bridge to improve connectivity between communities and strengthen access to markets.

Matalau says the proposed bridge would make it easier for farmers to transport their produce and other resources, helping them access economic opportunities and improve their livelihoods.

The council is also seeking to attract local and overseas investors to boost agricultural production and develop industries across Tailevu.

Matalau says these efforts are aimed at creating employment opportunities and establishing rural growth centres that would encourage people to remain in their villages while contributing to the local economy.

The council believes investment in infrastructure, agriculture and rural industries will help unlock Tailevu’s economic potential while creating sustainable employment for its people.

By improving access to markets and expanding economic opportunities, the province hopes to reduce poverty, address social challenges and enable more young people to build a better future within their communities.
