The Lautoka City Council has begun a tree management and replacement programme along Vitogo Parade as part of efforts to improve public safety while maintaining the city’s urban landscape.

Following an assessment of 217 Royal Palm trees, nine have been earmarked for removal after being found to have termite damage, hollow trunks, structural defects and other safety concerns.

Council teams today cleared overgrown Vaivai trees in the area, while work to remove and replace the affected Royal Palm trees is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

The Council said each tree is assessed individually, with attention focused on Royal Palm, Flame and Vaivai trees that are damaged, diseased or pose potential risks to pedestrians, motorists and nearby properties.

It also confirmed that relevant agencies, including the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, will be consulted when required before any tree is removed.

All trees taken down will be replaced with healthy young trees as part of the Council’s commitment to preserving and enhancing Lautoka’s urban greenery.
