The parliamentary seat left vacant following the death of Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh will not be filled and will remain vacant until the next General Election, the Electoral Commission has confirmed.

Singh, who served as Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, passed away in Brisbane on September 12, 2026.

In a statement The Electoral Commission said the decision is in accordance with Section 64(3) of the Constitution, which provides that a parliamentary seat remains vacant if it becomes vacant more than three years and six months after the first sitting of Parliament following the most recent General Election.

Supervisor of Election, Ana Mataiciwa said the constitutional period elapsed on June 24, 2026 and as a result, the Electoral Commission will not undertake any process to award Singh’s seat to another candidate from his political party.
