Flying Fijians hooker Zuriel Togiatama has secured a move to English club Newcastle Red Bulls, signing an initial one-year contract ahead of the new season.

The 27-year-old joins the club after an impressive stint with the Fijian Drua, where he made 50 appearances in Super Rugby Pacific. Togiatama has also represented Fiji on 14 occasions at international level and brings valuable experience to Newcastle’s forward pack.

A product of New Zealand rugby powerhouse Wesley College, Togiatama previously played for Counties Manukau in the National Provincial Championship, where he was a teammate of current Red Bulls back-rower Hoskins Sotutu.

Newcastle head coach Dan McFarland welcomed the signing, describing Togiatama as a powerful and highly competitive front-rower.

“Zuriel is a powerful front-rower who we’re delighted to welcome to Newcastle Red Bulls,” McFarland said.

“He has proven himself at both Super Rugby and international level, is strong in the set-piece, carries the ball with real intent and has the work rate and physicality that are so important for a hooker. He’s a highly competitive player who will add real quality and depth to our forward pack.”

The move comes at an important time for Newcastle, with fellow hooker George Turner sidelined after suffering an Achilles injury late last season.
