The two Nasinu Town Council enforcement officers, whose interaction with a produce vendor was captured on amateur video, and went viral on social media, have been suspended.

Special administrator Chair – Felix Magnus says, the council convened a special meeting on Wednesday, and after viewing the video, found that vegetables were being sold from a truck parked illegally, in the middle of Ratu Dovi Road, Kinoya.

Magnus says the council’s tribunal found – that the vendor breached Section 69 of the Nasinu Town Council ‘Code of Conduct’, which explicitly prohibits the obstruction of roadways, footpaths or passages, and grants enforcement officers the authority to remove obstructions, to ensure public safety and order.

He says the officers involved that were caught on camera – have been suspended for two weeks, and placed on paid leave to allow for a comprehensive and independent investigation, into their conduct.

Magnus says a staff meeting was convened to remind all council employees, of the importance of adhering to professional standards, and the Nasinu Town Council ‘Code of Conduct’ – especially when interacting with stakeholders and the general public.

He also says the council has formed an independent Investigation Committee – to provide a detailed report on its findings.

Magnus says the committee will review the existing procedures, for engaging with illegal vendors and suggest improvements.
