Residents of Viria Village in Naitasiri are set to benefit from a new $1.6 million multi-purpose evacuation centre following the official groundbreaking of the project this week.

The double-storey facility is expected to provide the community with a safe space during emergencies while also serving as a venue for everyday community activities.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, said the development reflects the Coalition Government’s efforts to improve disaster preparedness and resilience while recognising communities that have contributed to Fiji’s national development.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister Tuisawau acknowledged Viria Village’s contribution to the construction of the new main raw water intake, an important project aimed at improving water security for the Greater Suva Area and communities located along the lower-lying corridor.

He said the new evacuation centre represents part of the Government’s commitment to ensuring resource-owner communities receive meaningful and long-term benefits from their contributions to major national infrastructure projects.

For Viria residents, the facility is expected to provide both practical support during emergencies and a lasting community asset for years to come.
