Hundreds of buildings have been destroyed and at least 60,000 people have been forced to evacuate as firefighters continue battling three major wildfires in Spokane County, Washington.

Authorities say the fires have scorched more than 7,000 acres since igniting on Saturday and remain 0% contained. While no injuries or deaths have been confirmed, officials say the widespread damage means it will take time to determine the full extent of the destruction.

Many evacuees fled with only essential belongings, while some have returned to fire-ravaged areas to search through the remains of their homes. Others continue waiting for permission to re-enter their neighbourhoods.

Across Washington state, 15 major wildfires have burned more than 250,000 acres. The Pacific Northwest is experiencing its most severe wildfire season in over three decades, with climate change contributing to hotter, drier conditions that are fuelling the blazes.
