The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) officially welcomed Indonesia as its 38th member this afternoon, following the country’s reassignment from the South-East Asia Region.

The announcement was made during the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, marking a significant shift in regional collaboration and public health engagement. WPRO now includes 27 sovereign nations and 11 areas and territories, making it one of WHO’s most diverse and expansive regions.

Member countries extended strong support for Indonesia’s inclusion.

Vanuatu noted that Indonesia’s membership would “bolster and strengthen collaboration” among regional states.

The Philippines highlighted shared healthcare experiences and the potential for impactful partnerships.

Papua New Guinea, which shares a land border with Indonesia, welcomed the move and expressed confidence in closer public health cooperation.

WPRO Regional Director Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala also welcomed Indonesia’s integration, saying he looked forward to their contributions in shaping the region’s health future.

Indonesia’s inclusion is expected to enhance cross-border coordination on health policies, disease surveillance, and pandemic preparedness.
